What meditation technique do we teach?

Over the past three decades of guiding people in meditation, one of the most frequent questions I have been asked is:

What is the best meditation technique? What is the best way to meditate?

I have explored this question extensively over many years of practicing and teaching meditation around the world, under various teachers and masters, but before answering, I want to stress that whenever I respond to a question, I aim to bring an increased understanding and illumination to an area, to facilitate a freeing of the mind, rather than further binding it with more misconceptions.

Over the years, I have explored and learned so many different ways of going within. This has enabled me to teach these principles to people wanting to learn more about meditation, and I have also shared these teachings with meditation instructors and people looking to guide meditations.

In attempting to answer the question posed above, I have come to realise something important:

Meditation techniques and exercises can be very helpful in learning how to meditate, and at the same time they can be a hindrance to achieving depth in meditation.
